Where'd you go, Bernadette?

“That's right,' she told the girls. 'You are bored. And I'm going to let you in on a little secret about life. You think it's boring now? Well, it only gets more boring. The sooner you learn it's on you to make life interesting, the better off you'll be.” 

― Maria Semple, Where'd You Go, Bernadette. This quote may be the summary of the entire book, Where’d You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple, minus the laughing-so-hard-you-pee-your-pants, reading-this-paragraph-way-too-many-times-but-it’s-so-good, and crying-with-chocolate-bars-as-my-loyal-companian. 

    Bernadette Fox, a highly intelligent woman, is currently terrified of ambitious school parents, and Canadians. Living in Seattle, Washington is not an ideal place for Bernadette. Actually, Seattle is probably the worst place to live in Bernadette’s wild mind, but despite the Craftsman houses lining every street (shudder), the crazed Canadians in every direction (whimper), and the most horrifying of all…people who like…small talk (faint), Bernadette endures the suffering for her beloved husband, and darling daughter. When Bernadette finds herself planning a cruise to Antartica, giving all her family’s passports, driver’s license, credit cards, and e.c.t to the Russian Mafia, running over middle aged women who don’t like blackberry vines, climbing out bathroom windows, sleeping in department stores windows, and the best, disappearing into thin air, Bernadette will juggle life while breathing fire in this thriller of sorts.
