The Chinese Giant Salamander

The Chinese Giant Salamander is an extortionary animal that has survived many harsh environments, and still thrives today.

In the 1970s it was hunted vigorously, as the market grew for the “exotic” giant salamander meat. There were also animal farms where they were kept in captivity to hunt. As a result the giant, thick, stubby, long, grayish, greenish, brownish amphibian is now critically endangered today. However, people still poach the salamander today, even if there are laws against it!

The Chinese Giant Salamander has not been seen in the seen in the wildlife for almost 20 years due to the hunting, and now are kept in captivity for their safety. But the amphibian is often camouflaged with the Chinese rivers and streams, and spends its life in the water. Having no gills, it must absorb oxygen through its skin. It can bite, but there has never been reported attack.

While this 6 feet long salamander may seem threatening at first, it really is a harmless creature that needs our protection.
