The Girl with Red Hair

Winston Churchill once said "We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender", and that may have been exactly what Jannetje Johanna Schaft was thinking on April 17th, 1945.

Jannetje Johanna Schaft, also known as Hannie Schaft was born September 6th, 1920 in Haarlem, Netherlands. Hannie was an intelligent child, and had always suppressed an interest in politics and justice. When, she was old enough, she joined a university, and studied law. So, when the Germans invaded the Netherlands, Hannie found herself dropping out of school, and teaming up with 16 year old Truus Oversteegen and 14 year old Freddie Oversteegen.

Together, Hannie and the sisters were spies with the Netherlands Resistance. They were smart, and quick which made them very valuable, but they never could get spotted by their enemies...or so they thought so. On one mission, Hannie was fleeing the scene of crime, when one German soldier spotted a girl running away...a girl with bright red hair. From there on, all Germans were on the lookout for "The Girl with Red Hair". To be safe, Hannie dyed her gorgeous hair black, but even that wasn't enough. On April 17th, 1945, she was caught with illegal papers, and was found out to be " The Girl with Red Hair". On that very same day, Two German soldier took her outside, stood her against a wall, and shoot at her. The first soldier's shot didn't kill Hannie, it only wounded her. And so the beautiful, initellgent, outspoken, witty, girl's last words were "I can shoot better than that!". The second shot took her above, and beyond.

Hannie's work is famous today, and she is still known as "The Girl with Red Hair".
